چکیده

We discuss cosmology of models with universal extra dimensions, where the Standard Model degrees of freedom live in a 4 + n dimensional brane, with n compact and small extra spatial dimensions. In these models, the simplest way to obtain the conventional 4-dimensional Planck scale starting with a low string scale is to have also some larger extra dimensions, where only gravity propagates. In such theories, dimensional reduction generically leads to at least two radion fields, one associated with the total volume of the extra spatial dimensions, and the other with the ratio of the sizes of small and large extra dimensions. In this paper, we discuss the impact of the radion fields on cosmology. We emphasize various aspects of radion physics such as radion coupling to the Standard Model fields, bare and dressed radion masses during inflation, dynamical stabilization of radions during and after inflation, radion decay life time and its late dominance in thermal history of the Universe as well as its quantum fluctuations during inflation. We argue that models where the radion plays the role of an inflaton or the inflaton is a brane scalar field, run into problems. We then present a successful inflation model with bulk scalar fields that seems to have all the desired properties. We also briefly discuss the possibility of radion as a cold dark

Braneworld Cosmology, the Cmb and the Radion

Recent developments in the theory of extra dimensions have opened up avenues to confront such theories with cosmological tests. We discuss a brane-world model with a bulk scalar field, motivated by supergravity. The low-energy effective action is derived and physical constraints on the parameters of the model discussed. The cosmological evolution of the brane-world moduli is investigated and it...

Supersymmetric theories with compact extra dimensions in N = 1 superfields

We present an N = 1 superfield formulation of supersymmetric gauge theories with a compact extra dimension. The formulation incorporates the radion superfield and allows to write supersymmetric theories on warped gravitational backgrounds. We apply it to study the breaking of supersymmetry by the F -term of the radion, and show that, for flat extra dimensions, this leads to the same mass spectr...

Inflation from Extra Dimensions

The radial mode of n extra compact dimensions (the radion, b) can cause inflation in theories where the fundamental gravity scale, M , is smaller than the Planck scale MP . For radion potentials V (b) with a simple polynomial form, to get the observed density perturbations, the energy scale of V (b) must greatly exceed M ∼ 1 TeV: V (b) ≡ MV ∼ 10−4MP . This gives a large radion mass and reheat t...

Moduli Stabilization with the String Higgs Effect

Abstract We review the notion of the Higgs effect in the context of string theory. We find that by including this effect in time dependent backgrounds, one is led to a natural mechanism for stabilizing moduli at points of enhanced gauge symmetry. We consider this mechanism for the case of the radion (size of the extra dimensions) and find that as decompactification of the large spatial dimensio...
